Vinylec (Polyvinyl Formal)
The Formvar formula was bought by the competition and it is no longer
manufactured under that name. Prepared using the same method as the nitrocellulose
solutions; virtually all moisture is removed. Solvent is purified EM grade

Carbon Films are extremely stable under the electron beam. They are usually made as very thin films, generally 200 Angstroms or more. Although they do have a fine background structure, it is of low contrast and does not interfere significantly with the specimen image.
Silicon Monoxide Films, having very little background contrast, are excellent for high resolution work and are quite flexible.
Plastic Type Films, Vinylec (Polyvinyl Formal) and nitrocellulose (collodion),
are generally on the order of 200 Angstroms or more thick. They have a
tendency to decompose in the electron beam and to shrink slightly when
first irradiated.
